Fried Squash Blossoms

Ingredients

 

  • Fresh Squash Blossoms*
  • One white string cheese stick for every two blossoms, cut in half and put in freezer 20-30 minutes
  • Boxed Tempura Batter, mixed according to package instructions (or your own homemade)
  • Oil for frying, such as peanut or canola
  • Hawaiian Volcano Guava Smoked Sea Salt

 

Preparation Instructions

1.Heat 2” deep oil in dutch oven to 375 degrees

2.Carefully pinch out the stamen from the inside bottom of each flower without damaging petals

3.Put one half of a semi-frozen (frozen solid is ok too) cheese stick inside each flower and twist end gently to close in cheese

4.Dip in tempura batter, allowing excess to drip off

5.Fry in hot oil approximately 1 to 1 ½ minutes, turn and fry second side 1 minute more until all sides are crisp. Remove to rack over a baking sheet lined with a paper towel**

5.Sprinkle with Guava Smoked Sea Salt while still hot

*Squash blossoms can be found in the summer in your own home garden, at Farmer’s Markets, and at specialty markets such as Whole Foods

**Setting on a rack, rather than directly on a paper towel, will help keep fried foods crisp longer
